VOLUNTARY ACTIVITY

THE SCIENTIST'S APPRENTICE

APRENDIZ DE CIENTÍFIC@

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY

HEALTHY HABITS FOR OUR MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEMS.
We need to keep our musculoskeletal systems in good condition so they can support our bodies and help us to move. To do this we need to develop healthy habits.
Doing regular physical exercise, having a healthy diet, lifting things carefully and sitting correctly, and getting sufficient sleep are healthy habits.
-          Doing some exercise kind of sport helps to make our muscles strong and keep them in good condition. But excessive exercise and hard knocks can cause injuries to your musculoskeletal system.
-          It is very important to adopt the correct posture when we sit down, pick objects up off the floor, walk or do any activity.
-          It is important to have a healthy diet to give our bodies the necessary nutrients and energy to carry our our daily activities. Remember the pyramid food.
-          We also need to sleep about 10 hours every day so that our musculoskeletal systems can rest.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
Buying things we do not use, throwing things away that someone could still use and throwing rubbish away carelessly are three things to avoid. It is important to follow the rule of the 3R's.
REDUCE: we need to avoid buying things that quickly become rubbish, like plastic bags and packaging.
REUSE: we can fully use things before we throw them away. For example, we can use both sides of a piece of paper.
RECYCLE: sometimes we can recycle materials like paper or glass to make new products.
Vocabulary:
Careless: without thinking.

SCIENCE. THE USES OF MATERIALS.
PLASTIC. It is an artificial material obtained from oil and can substitute many other materials. We use plastic to make: bottles.
PAPER: It is manufactured from wood. It has many uses: for writing on, for printing books…
METAL: There are many metals; their use depends on their properties. We specially use iron, aluminum, gold and silver. They are very important because they allow us to transport electricity, construct buildings and make cars.
WOOD: Wood is obtained from trees. It is used in all kinds of construction, especially for building homes and furniture. The properties of wood, like hardness and colour, depend on the tree it comes from. It is also used to make paper.
FABRIC: There is a huge variety of fabrics that have different properties for different needs and different types of clothes. For example, they can be waterproof like a raincoat, lightweight or strong.
GLASS. Glass is made from sand. It is a solid, fragile and transparent material used to make: windows, mirrors…
